I wanted to paint a portrait of my grandfather who died in 2013. I chose a photograph of him by Udi Bram who has an unusual talent for capturing people's character in a photograph. The photograph was taken from below and shows my grandfather looking downwards.
Unlike the photograph, in the painting I wanted to give him some space below the face to portray his magnitude as a person.
I used the canvas lengthwise, and positioned his portrait at the top right to give him a long diagonal gaze at the viewer. I chose a limited palette of lavenders and blues to emphasize his softness and strength. My grandfather was blind, and appreciated art very much.
